Work-Life Balance During the Holidays: 11 Smart Ways To Reduce The Holiday Mental Load

Nov 13, 2025

Prefer to listen? Us too.

For many parents, the holidays bring a mix of joy and pressure. Office deadlines collide with school performances, extended family visits, and endless to-dos. The holiday mental load is real, and without boundaries, your personal time can disappear into gift wrapping, decorating, cooking, and cleanup, leaving no time to actually savor and enjoy the holiday moments with your family. In fact, one poll found that the average American spends about six weeks planning and executing presents, meals, decorations, and other holiday details.

Being smart about where you invest your time and energy is the key to a healthier work-life balance during the holidays, especially when the demands on your time seem to double. I encourage working parents to delegate low-joy tasks that either take too much time, drain their energy, or add to that familiar sense of rushing around.

The holidays are meant for connection, not exhaustion. Consider this your permission to delegate the tasks that don’t light you up — the secret to real work-life balance during the holidays.

1. Hire Someone To Wrap Presents (Save 3 Hours)

hire someone to wrap presents

Raise your hand if you’ve ever been up until midnight frantically wrapping Christmas gifts after everyone’s asleep. Newsflash: it doesn’t have to be like this. You can hire someone to wrap presents — whether that’s your nanny, babysitter, or a family assistant.

For example, if you are hiring a babysitter for the night while you and your partner are at the company holiday party, you can ask if they’d be willing to wrap some gifts for an extra tip. You can have them take on vendor gifts, family gifts, and even “Santa” ones. Just make sure you show them where the supplies are and leave any instructions if there’s a certain way you want them done.

We’ve also vetted a few family assistant companies that can help with gift wrapping, including an option to have them wrap at their own location, which is great for stealthily wrapping Santa gifts without the kids seeing.

If wrapping is your calm-down ritual, keep a small batch to do yourself and delegate the rest. When you’re not staying up late surrounded by tape and paper, you’re giving yourself the gift of recovery time — a key part of sustainable work-life balance during the holidays.

2. Schedule In-Home Haircuts Or Styles (Save 1 Hour)

holiday mental load

In-home beauty services are one of my favorite time-savers as a busy parent. Instead of schlepping to the salon, book a mobile stylist for an in-home haircut or blowout ahead of important events.

You can even schedule in-home haircuts for the whole family on the same day. This will also help reduce the holiday mental load because you won’t have to worry about scheduling and coordinating different family members’ haircuts on different days. Instead, just block off a chunk of time one Saturday morning and get them all out of the way at the same time.

You’ll save multiple trips to the salon, avoid waiting around, and reduce the holiday mental load of coordinating everyone’s appointments.

Schedule tree delivery and removal during a time when your family assistant or home helper can be onsite during the 2-3 hour window to avoid the hassle of waiting for delivery trucks

While they wait, they can also decorate, test lights, or set the dining table exactly how you like it. Which brings us to the next smart way to save time during the holidays…

4. Get Help Decorating For Christmas (Save 3 Hours)

holiday mental load

Holiday decorating can be fun when you have the time, but it can also easily turn into another source of stress. Outsource parts — or all — of your decor for peace of mind and better work-life balance during the holidays.

  • General décor: Ask your nanny or family assistant to help decorate for Christmas. They can place garlands, hang stockings, and style shelves with what you already own. We’ve also vetted services through Proxy that will come to your home to help you decorate for the holidays.

"Proxy took the research, review, reading, trial and error, and coordination struggles out of everything."

  • Tablescape design: Hire a professional to style your table, from linens to florals, so it’s photo-ready without guesswork. We have a few services through Proxy that we love and have personally used for New Year and holiday tablescape designs.
You can then ask your family assistant to decorate the dining room table, including setting the table with your china. Just show them where everything is and do one place setting the way you want it as an example.

Outsourcing these details lightens the holiday mental load while keeping your home festive and inviting.

Proxy Tip 💬

If you and your partner use the Fair Play method to divide up the household mental load, Proxy can help you delegate parts of the cards’ planning and execution steps so that they actually get done—without burning anyone out.

For example, using a gifting concierge is an excellent way for the “Gifts” card holder to get some extra help during the holidays. Delegate the wrapping too, and the card becomes much more doable when you’re strapped for time.

Have a different Fair Play holiday card? Text Proxy — (820) 732-2625 — with any question you have about it and we’ll respond in minutes with vetted advice and clear next steps. If you’re still in the decision phase, we can help you think through the card and decide what to do yourself, what to outsource, and what gives you the biggest return on time saved. Or, if you’re ready to delegate, text us what you need and we’ll send back a vetted recommendation near you. (We've also written a whole article about it if you want to check it out, Fair Play Cards, Made Doable: What To Delegate When You’re Carrying Too Much.

6. Get Help Hanging Christmas Lights (Save 2 Hours)

help hanging christmas lights

Outdoor lighting adds magic to your home but often requires ladders, time, and some physical agility. Instead, get help hanging Christmas lights by booking a professional light-install service or a TaskRabbit. It’s safer, faster, and frees you for the fun parts — like sipping cocoa with your kids when the lights turn on.

7. Hire A Chef Or Meal-Prep Service For Holiday Dinner (Save 8 Hours)

work life balance during the holidays

Cooking and cleanup can eat an entire weekend. A private chef can plan, shop for, cook, and even clean up your holiday dinner. You can truly offload the entire mental load of planning and executing a holiday dinner party.

We’ve vetted some amazing private chef companies through Proxy that specialize in placing chefs for special events. Text us — (820) 732-2625 — to get matched to a service in your area.

Or take a hybrid approach: order pies, grab a pre-made turkey from your local grocery store, and make a few sides yourself. Wildgrain is also an amazing service for getting artisan breads and pastries delivered. They’re made by independent bakeries, and all you need to do is pop them in the oven.

Even if you enjoy cooking, you don’t need to do all the cooking yourself. Protecting your energy is key to maintaining work-life balance during the holidays. Focus your efforts on the 1 or 2 recipes you’re most excited about and find ways to delegate the rest.

Investment Cost: ~$630-$840 (or $500-$740 with Proxy)

8. Outsource Holiday Cards (Save 1 Hour)

holiday mental load

Just like with gift wrapping, you can ask your nanny, family assistant, or babysitter if they’ll stuff, address, and mail your holiday cards for an extra fee. You could even have them order postage, drop them off at the post office, or upload contacts for digital versions.

Small tasks like this add up — and outsourcing them helps you preserve focus for family and work priorities while easing your holiday mental load.

We have also vetted a wonderful service through Proxy that can handle holiday cards for you. They’ll print, stuff, stamp, and mail the cards without you lifting a finger.

9. Book A Day-After Babysitter (Gain 6 Hours Of Rest)

work life balance during the holidays

Hosting wipes everyone out — especially parents. Invest in a nanny or babysitter the morning after a big event (ie: 8am - 2pm) for six hours of downtime. Sleep, watch a movie, or simply do nothing. Choosing how to spend your own time is the ultimate luxury and one of the best ways to restore your work-life balance during the holidays.

10. Hire Help For Holiday Cleanup (Save 8 Hours)

holiday mental load

The day after hosting can feel like a hangover even without the wine. Schedule a housecleaning service for the next morning. They’ll reset your kitchen, vacuum, and tackle dishes while you take a walk or just breathe.

The key is to schedule them in advance. You can also have them wash china or glassware — anything you would have done yourself after hosting. That may cost extra, and you’ll need to add that request to your booking, but it’s highly worth it in my opinion!

11. Don’t Forget Decoration Takedown And Storage (Save 3+ Hours)

The season’s end brings its own to-do list. Delegate taking down Christmas decorations (the least exciting part!), wrapping fragile ornaments, and labeling bins for next year. Your future self will thank you.

Recap: How To Achieve Work-Life Balance During The Holidays

holiday mental load

My best advice for maintaining work-life balance during the holidays is the same I use to achieve work-life balance year-round: start by defining what matters most. What’s most important to you this holiday season? Do you want to be fully present with family? Carry out your favorite holiday tradition?  Or do you want to wrap every gift perfectly yourself? Once you’re clear on your goal, delegating becomes easier — because every “no” supports a bigger “yes.”

"Proxy has very quickly paid for itself in both money and time, helping me to outsource low-joy tasks."

Homeschool Mom of 3

The holidays should fill your cup — not empty it. Delegating, outsourcing, and setting boundaries aren’t indulgent; they’re smart. You deserve a joyful season where work-life balance feels possible, the holiday mental load is lighter, and you have time to rest, connect, and actually enjoy the moments you’ve worked so hard to create.
